Top 5 Travel Apps that Work Offline

Data roaming charges can put a damper on anybody’s holiday and so we’ve come up with 5 great travel apps that will still work even without data coverage or being connected to Wi-Fi. Some of the apps will not have their full functionality available but they will still be extremely useful.

Avenza PDF Maps (Free)

This app is a powerful, offline map viewer with the ability to download purchased and free professionally created maps. The maps are stored on your device and are always available, even without an Internet connection. There are also maps designed for specific purposes such as hiking, marine navigation and transit.

HopStop (Free)

If you really like to experience a destination like a local, you probably like to take their public transit. You can truly experience a city by using their public transit but you can also get very lost if you are not careful! With HopStop, you can get detailed subway, bus, train, taxi, walking and biking directions as well as estimate travel time and cost for a taxi. You don’t need to be connected to Wi-Fi in order to use this app although you won’t be able to get real-time transit information such as travel delays.

XE Currency (Free)

Easily convert currency with this app that contains more than 30,000 currency charts with historical rate. When you use this app offline, the most recent rate that was updated before you went offline is used.

Spotted by Locals (Each city guide is $3.99)

This free app allows you to buy a city guide full of tips from local bloggers for authentic places to visit that often get overlooked by guidebooks. Once you have downloaded the city guide before you travel, the app works completely offline with full detailed city maps in addition to the insider tips and recommendations. City guides are available for over 40 European cities and 9 North American cities.

Free Wi-Fi Finder (Free)

Even with these great apps that work offline, there are probably still some apps that you want to use that require an Internet connection (e.g. being able to post some photos during your travels to Facebook or Instagram). This app lets you find free Wi-Fi by searching its global database of hotspots without needing an Internet connection first.
